Simon Tully (Yokoburi Dojo founder and chief instructor) talks to Enjoy Exmouth More about the martial art form of Budo Taijutsu that he teaches at the Exmouth-based club.

“At the Yokoburi Dojo we teach a fusion of traditional Ki Aikido and a style of Budo Taijutsu known as Shinkengata - a modern application for combat methods of survival in today’s difficult times.

“Budo Taijutsu means martial body technique through natural movement and is an ancient martial art born on the battlefields of ancient Japan. Unlike modern martial arts we do not wear protective clothing or practise punching and kicking with pads, this is the real thing!

“As well as Karate (empty handed) techniques, we practise with everything from traditional Japanese weapons based on farming tools, to the car keys and smartphone that you carry with you today.

“We have been training now in Exmouth for 10 years last June and classes consist of a full warm-up, which includes yoga, pilates, cardio and traditional martial arts stretching, followed by partner training where students learn techniques and variation with emphasis on ‘playing’ and working around personal limitation or injury.

The classes are held in the main hall of Marpool Primary school in Exmouth every Tuesday night from 7:30pm to 9:45pm and on Thursdays during the summer months in Woodbury Common. We like to train outside in the elements as much as we can!

“There’s a real family feeling in the club with long term committed students. Beginners are always joining and learning how to defend themselves and their families, get fit, or just gain self confidence. No matter what the reason we all have a good laugh in a relaxed, yet traditional class.”
