Businesses celebrate five years of success in Exmouth

Two Exmouth businesses are celebrating five years in business this month, the Journal met the owners to find out the secrets to their success.

Antonio’s café and health food shop Mother Nature both opened in October 2013 and are now fixtures of the town centre, highlighting that even in a difficult period for High Streets success is possible.

Antonio Badcott’s café specialises in authentic Italian gelato, stocks 18 different ice cream flavours and has served more than 250,000 shots of espresso over the past five years.

Antonio, 52, who is of Italian descent, explained how it all started: “When my mother passed away my wife Caroline and I had to decide what to do with the inheritance and we decided to take the exciting option and open a café.”

His biggest challenge since opening has been staying profitable during periods of bad weather.

Antonio has some advice for anyone looking to start a business in the town: “I would tell them to research the idea thoroughly six months before opening. Good ideas do not always equate to good businesses.”

Mother Earth owner Lorraine Ross, 57, turned her passion into a business, she said: “Health foods and providing products to improve people’s quality of life has been a passion of mine for years. There are other health food shops here but not to this standard, opening this shop was an opportunity I had to take.

“Our biggest challenge has been letting people know we’re here. The people who do know come back regularly and are passionate about what we do.

“I hope we can make people aware of the amount of chemicals they are taking in from toiletries and modern life in general and the effect that’s having on them.

Lorraine added: “Meeting our customers is by far the best thing about owning the shop; we’ve got some lovely customers who create a great atmosphere.

“You’ve got to give good customer service, listen to what people need and respond to that.”

Being environmentally friendly is a core principle for Lorraine, stocking bamboo toothbrushes, offering refills for some of her liquid products and recycling where possible.
