Uplifting, feelgood musical based on the popular movie starring Whoopi Goldberg, comes to the Exmouth Pavilion in June

Exmouth audiences are in for a fabulous treat when Exmouth Musical Theatre Company brings the hilarious Sister Act to the Pavilion, from Wednesday June 5th to Saturday 8.

The uplifting musical is based on the popular 1992 movie starring Whoopi Goldberg, and featured original music by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors). It was nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The show tells the story of nightclub singer Deloris van Cartier and the Sisters of Holy Angels Convent. When Deloris sees her mobster beau commit murder, she is relocated for her protection to the convent, disguised as a nun, and proceeds to upend the quiet lives of the residents.

Exmouth Musical Theatre's leading lady Debra Butler is no stranger to the Pavilion stage, having been a member of the Company for over 25 years. She has played many lead roles including Adelaide in Guys 'n' Dolls, Florence in Chess, Charity in Sweet Charity and, in her much younger days, Maria in The Sound of Music. Debra says "The Sound of Music saw me surrounded by nuns, and it's happening again! Sister Act is such a feelgood show. We are in the thick of rehearsals and the ladies are having so much fun! There aren't many shows where the ladies get to be in all the best songs and scenes so we are making the most of it!"

In recent years, Debra has taken on a slightly different job within the company, having turned her hand to directing and choreographing. The company's multi award nominated production of Into the Woods last June was directed by Debra, as was Evita, two years ago. Evita won both the Best Musical Production and Outstanding Choreography trophies at the National Operatic and Dramatic Associations, South West awards. Debra says "it was great for the Company to be recognised in this way for all the hard work that goes into our productions. I worked with Angela Blackwell as our Musical Director on both of the shows that I directed and it's lovely to be working with her in a different way on Sister Act too".

Tickets for Sister Act are available now from the Exmouth Pavilion Box Office 01395 222477 or exmouthpavilion@ledleisure.co.uk
